Artifacts from Thessaloniki itself make up most of the collection at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Θεσσαλονίκης), which holds and interprets material from the Prehistoric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Finds from the wider region of Macedonia extend the picture beyond the city.
The museum was founded in 1912, and its building was designed by the architect Patroklos Karantinos.
