The cruiser Aurora is best known as the ship that reportedly fired the shot signalling the start of the attack on the Winter Palace during the October Revolution. Today the vessel, Avrora (Авро́ра) in Russian, is preserved as a museum ship in Saint Petersburg and is protected as a federal cultural heritage site.
Aurora is a protected cruiser, a type of warship whose vital machinery is shielded by an armoured deck rather than heavy side armour. She was one of three Pallada-class cruisers built in Saint Petersburg for service in the Pacific Ocean.
Her career extends beyond 1917. All three ships of her class served in the Russo-Japanese War. Aurora survived the Battle of Tsushima, was interned under United States protection in the Philippines, and later returned to the Baltic Fleet.
