One of the maps in the Azerbaijan State Agriculture Museum is made of wheat grains, lentils and watercress, and a second is embroidered in silk thread. Founded in 1924, the museum traces the history of agricultural development in Azerbaijan and reflects the state of farming today.
Its more than 10,000 exhibits are mostly agricultural tools, both traditional and modern, alongside models of harvesters. The displays cover crop growing, cattle breeding and horticulture. Ethnographic sections use documents, photographs and reconstructed facilities to show traditional rural life. Among the older pieces are a hand-mill for grinding flour and an oil lamp, each more than a century old, a stone for extracting grape juice, ceramic jugs for whipping milk and making butter, and stirrups and saddles.
Staff wear Azerbaijani national dress, and traditional music plays in the halls. The museum also holds documentary screenings and lectures. It suits children and adults alike and is especially popular with students, for whom it runs themed lessons on how farming in Azerbaijan developed.
