A private collection begun by Josef Müller in 1907, and carried on by his daughter Monique and son-in-law Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller, forms the core of the Barbier-Mueller Museum. Founded in 1977 at 10 rue Jean-Calvin in Geneva, the museum exists to preserve, study and publish this family collection.
The holdings number more than 7,000 pieces, including works of art from tribal cultures and classical antiquity, along with sculptures, fabrics and ornaments from traditional societies around the world. The museum is listed as a Swiss cultural property of regional significance.
Its international reputation rests largely on travelling exhibitions, loans to other museums, and a long list of catalogues and art books. In 1997 a sister institution devoted to pre-Columbian art, the Museu Barbier-Mueller d'Art Precolombí, opened in Barcelona.
