The Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève was the first contemporary art institution in French-speaking Switzerland, founded in 1974 by Adelina von Fürstenberg. It works as a Kunsthalle, an exhibition hall without a permanent collection, so everything on view belongs to temporary exhibitions and projects with regional and international artists.
The centre built its international reputation on shows by artists including Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Gilbert & George, On Kawara, William Kentridge, Pipilotti Rist, Maurizio Cattelan and Lawrence Weiner. In 2010 it took on the mission of the Centre pour l'Image Contemporaine. That centre was founded in Geneva in 1985 to present video, multimedia, internet-based work, photography and film, including through the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement.
The institution is listed as a class A Swiss cultural property of national significance. It suits visitors who want to see changing exhibitions of contemporary art and moving-image work rather than a fixed collection.
