Barley Hall is a medieval townhouse on Coffee Yard in York, built around 1360 by the monks of Nostell Priory near Wakefield and extended in the 15th century. Over the following centuries the house slowly declined, and by the 20th century it had been divided up and was in increasingly poor condition.
The York Archaeological Trust bought the property in 1987, gave it the name Barley Hall and restored it as a museum. Today the reconstructed house is an independent historic house museum and a Grade II listed building, a designation for buildings of special architectural or historic interest. It also hosts exhibitions.
