Paintings spanning seven centuries, from the 14th century to the present day, form the core of York Art Gallery's collection. Alongside them are prints, watercolours, drawings and ceramics, giving the gallery a reach that runs from early painting to contemporary work.
The gallery stands on Exhibition Square in York and dates its founding to 1892. Its building is Grade II listed, a designation given in England to buildings of special architectural or historic interest. After closing in 2013 for major redevelopment, it reopened in the summer of 2015. Today it is a public gallery managed by York Museums Trust.
