Known affectionately to locals as the Zolli, Basel Zoo (Zoo Basel on signs) opened in 1874 and is the oldest zoo in Switzerland. It sits within walking distance of the city centre, set in green, wooded grounds along the Birsig stream. Around two million people visit each year.
The zoo has a long record of breeding endangered species. In 1956 it saw the first Indian rhinoceros born in captivity, and in 1959 Goma became the first gorilla born in a European zoo. Okapis, pygmy hippos, great apes and big cats remain among its best-known residents. The Vivarium holds fish, reptiles, penguins and other aquatic animals. The Etoscha House shows life in an African savannah, from small creatures to the large animals of the open plains.
The grounds are compact and easy to walk, which suits families with young children. Most visitors spend half a day here.
