Furniture and objects designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius are at the centre of the Bauhaus Museum, run by the Bauhaus Foundation as a private, non-profit museum and research centre devoted to the conservation, study and display of Bauhaus architecture, design and art.
The display area is compact, about 120 square metres, and holds furniture and belongings connected with the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s and 1930s, alongside exhibitions on the International Style, the modernist architectural approach that grew out of movements such as the Bauhaus. The museum suits visitors with an interest in modernist design and architecture who want a focused look at the movement.
The museum occupies a 1934 building by Shlomo Gepstein at 21 Bialik Street, next to Bialik House and the old Tel Aviv City Hall. It was founded in 2007 by the American art collector and philanthropist Ronald Lauder, who owns it. Daniella Luxembourg led the initial project. The site is listed as a heritage site in Israel.
