More than 24,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and decorative arts make up the collection of the Birmingham Museum of Art, spanning Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian and Native American cultures. It also holds Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculptures and decorative objects dating from the late 13th century to around 1750. That range suits visitors who want a broad survey of art in one place.
The museum was founded in 1951 and is owned by the City of Birmingham. It occupies 3.9 acres in the city's cultural district. Its present building, designed by Warren, Knight & Davis, dates from 1959, and a major renovation and expansion by the New York architect Edward Larrabee Barnes was completed in 1993. The facility covers 180,000 square feet, including an outdoor sculpture garden. A memorial garden, established in 1955 by Fariss Gambrill Lynn, president of the Red Mountain Garden Club, has been expanded and altered as the museum grew.
The museum belongs to the Monuments Men and Women Museum Network, launched in 2021 by the Monuments Men and Women Foundation.
