Sloss Furnaces is the only blast furnace in the United States preserved and restored for public use, and one of the first industrial sites in the country to be saved this way. From 1882 to 1971 it produced pig iron in Birmingham, Alabama, on a wide strip of land that the city's original plan reserved for railroads and industry. The furnaces were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981.
The site now serves as an interpretive museum of industry, with a visitor center that opened in 2016. It also runs a metal arts program and education programs for students, and it doubles as a venue for concerts and festivals. That mix draws school groups and music audiences as well as visitors interested in industrial history.
