One of the first modernist houses in Brazil, designed by Gregori Warchavchik in 1929 and protected by municipal law since 1978, is home to the Aúthos Pagano Higher Studies and Cultural Center (Centro Cultural e de Estudos Superiores Aúthos Pagano) in São Paulo's Alto da Lapa neighborhood. The house was the residence of the Uruguayan-Brazilian academic Aúthos Pagano and his wife, the lawyer Carmela Antonia Danna Pagano. She founded the center in 1982 to preserve his memory and work.
Inside are the couple's original furniture, personal objects and works of art, along with Pagano's personal library of more than 10,000 titles in law, economics, statistics, mathematics, astronomy and physics. The center is a state public institution, maintained by São Paulo's culture secretariat and run jointly with the Pensarte Institute.
It holds a regular program of courses, lectures, debates, performances and a choral singing workshop, and it has a small auditorium seating 60. It suits visitors interested in early Brazilian modernist architecture and the home life of a scholar.
