Before it ever opened to the public, the collection of the Museum of Veterinary Anatomy served as teaching material for the lecturers of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ) at the University of São Paulo. Its full Portuguese name, Museu de Anatomia Veterinária Prof. Dr. Plínio Pinto e Silva, often shortened to MAV, honours a veterinarian and member of the São Paulo Veterinary Medicine Academy. He was among the first at the faculty to earn the title of associate professor.
The museum opened to visitors in 1984. Its permanent exhibition is studied and curated by the faculty's teachers, professionals and students. Between 2004 and 2008 it closed while the FMVZ moved its headquarters to the university's main campus, known as Cidade Universitária.
