For nearly three decades, from 1749 to 1778, this house at 4 Charles Street was home to Charles Wesley, the hymn writer and co-founder of Methodism, and his wife Sarah Wesley, née Gwynne. It was his main residence between 1756 and 1771.
The house was also the childhood home of their sons, Charles Wesley junior and Samuel Wesley. Both were musical child prodigies who grew up to become renowned organists and composers. Today the interior is restored to its 18th-century appearance, with period fittings, and the building is Grade II* listed.
It suits visitors interested in the early history of Methodism, in English church music, or in seeing how an 18th-century family home was furnished.
