The oldest purpose-built Methodist preaching house, John Wesley's New Room opened in June 1739 and housed the earliest Methodist societies. The chapel was enlarged in 1748, and Historic England lists the building at Grade I.
A Methodist museum occupies the preachers' rooms above the chapel. Outside, the courtyards around the building hold statues of John Wesley and his brother Charles. The New Room stands between The Horsefair and Broadmead in Bristol, and it suits visitors interested in the origins of Methodism or in historic chapel architecture.
