Among the priceless objects at the Chester Beatty (Leabharlann Chester Beatty) are one of the surviving volumes of the first illustrated Life of the Prophet and the Gospel of Mani, one of the last surviving Manichaean scriptures. This museum and library in the grounds of Dublin Castle is home to one of the most significant collections of historical artefacts and manuscripts from all over the world, including many manuscripts from the Medinet Madi library.
It is also one of the premier sources for scholarship on both the Old and New Testaments, which makes it especially rewarding for visitors interested in manuscripts and religious texts. Alongside the permanent collections, the museum offers temporary exhibitions, many with works lent by foreign institutions and collections.
The collections belonged to the mining magnate Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, and the library was established in 1953 in Dublin 4 to house them. The present museum opened on 7 February 2000, the 125th anniversary of Beatty's birth, and was named European Museum of the Year in 2002.
