Ireland's moving image heritage, from 1897 to the present day, is kept in the climate-controlled vaults of the Irish Film Archive, part of the Irish Film Institute in Dublin's Temple Bar. The collection holds around 30,000 cans of film, 15,000 tapes, the Tiernan MacBride reference library and more than 30,000 stills, posters and documents. It covers fiction features, documentaries, newsreels, public information films, amateur footage, experimental film and animation.
Material from the collection is shown at regular screenings at the Irish Film Institute and at other venues in Ireland and abroad. The Archive is the leading resource for students of Irish film history. Academics, teachers, film-makers, researchers, film enthusiasts and the general public all use it.
The Archive began as a department of the Institute in 1986 and was formally established in 1992, when the Temple Bar building opened. A second facility on the Maynooth University campus opened in 2018 and tripled its capacity. It is Ireland's only member of the International Federation of Film Archives.
