Preserving China's existing films and restoring 'lost' ones is the founding purpose of the China Film Archive, established in Beijing in 1958. It is owned and operated by the Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party.
The archive is a cinematheque, an institution devoted to keeping and showing films, as well as a research institute and a graduate school. In recent years it has worked with international film bodies on film preservation and has organised numerous events, most notably the Beijing International Film Festival.
