The Clockarium is devoted entirely to Art Deco ceramic clocks. It specialises in faience mantel clocks, faience being glazed earthenware. In the 1920s and 1930s these were the first timepieces everyone could afford, and they decorated many homes in Belgium and Northern France. Its full French name, Musée de l'horloge Art Déco en faïence, describes that focus exactly.
The setting matches the collection. The museum occupies an Art Deco house built in 1935 by the architect Gustave Bossuyt, at 163 boulevard Auguste Reyers in Schaerbeek, a municipality of Brussels. Founded in 1999, it suits visitors with an interest in Art Deco design, everyday decorative objects or the history of clocks.
