Berlin's national museum of German history occupies the Zeughaus, the baroque former Prussian arsenal on Unter den Linden and the oldest building on the boulevard. Visitors see its name, Deutsches Historisches Museum, on signs. Its inner courtyard, the Schlüterhof, is lined with Andreas Schlüter's sculpted heads of dying warriors, a striking and sombre reminder of the building's military purpose.
Behind the Zeughaus stands a contrasting modern exhibition hall designed by I. M. Pei, with a glass-walled spiral stair tower that draws architecture enthusiasts in its own right. The hall is used for the museum's temporary exhibitions. The collections cover German history in a European context, from weapons, uniforms and political posters to paintings, documents and everyday objects.
The museum was founded in West Berlin in 1987. After reunification it took over the Zeughaus and the collections of East Germany's Museum für Deutsche Geschichte, which had occupied the building. It is one of the city's most visited museums.
