The Diocesan Museum of Amalfi (Museo Diocesano) occupies the Basilica of the Crucifix, the older church that stands beside Amalfi Cathedral and served the town before the present cathedral was built. Its setting is as much a draw as its contents. The museum forms part of the cathedral complex, together with the Cloister of Paradise and the crypt that holds the relics of Saint Andrew.
The collection is small and focused on the cathedral's sacred art and treasury. It includes liturgical vessels, vestments, reliquaries and carved stone pieces. Its best-known object is a jewelled medieval mitre richly worked with pearls.
The museum draws around 320,000 visitors a year, many of them exploring the cathedral complex as a whole. It suits visitors interested in religious art and the medieval history of Amalfi, and its compact size makes for a fairly short visit.
