A former gasometer in Dresden houses a giant panoramic painting by the Austrian-born artist Yadegar Asisi, who coined the name Panometer by combining "panorama" and "gasometer". The building is a listed cultural monument, or Kulturdenkmal, under German heritage protection.
Two of Asisi's panoramas take turns in the space, each accompanied by an exhibition. Baroque Dresden imagines the city as it might have looked in 1756. Dresden 1945 shows it after its destruction in the Second World War. Together they suit visitors who want to see how the city looked at two very different moments in its past.
Asisi created the Dresden Panometer in 2006, three years after opening a Panometer in Leipzig.
