Founded in 1861, Dresden Zoo (Zoo Dresden) is among the oldest zoos in Germany, and it still occupies its original site on the southern edge of the Großer Garten, the city's large baroque park. Its compact grounds draw more than a million visitors a year, which makes it one of Dresden's most popular attractions.
The zoo keeps animals from several continents, with large mammals, primates, big cats and birds among them. Older enclosures sit alongside newer, more naturalistic houses and outdoor areas. The site is small enough to cover comfortably on foot, and a visit of a few hours suits families with children and anyone who wants a break from Dresden's art collections and palaces.
The zoo was heavily damaged in the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 and was rebuilt in the decades that followed. It sits beside the Großer Garten, so a visit to the zoo is easily combined with a walk in the park.
