Fairfax House owes its interiors to Charles Gregory Fairfax, 9th Viscount Fairfax of Emley, who bought the Georgian townhouse on Castlegate in 1759 and had John Carr remodel the inside as a home for his daughter Ann. The Viscount paid for it with his inheritance from his late wife, the heiress Elizabeth Clifford, daughter of Hugh Clifford, 2nd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh. The house itself was probably built in the early 1740s for a local merchant.
After the Viscount's death in 1772, the house was sold and passed through several local families. It later served as a gentleman's club, a building society and a cinema. York Civic Trust bought the property in the 1980s and restored it completely to its former grandeur.
Today it is a historic house museum and a Grade I listed building. It stands near Clifford's Tower and York Castle Museum.
