At the Jorvik Viking Centre, visitors ride in time capsule carriages fitted with speakers through life-size dioramas of Viking life in York, peopled with lifelike mannequins. The scenes recreate the city as it was under Viking rule, making this as much a visitor attraction as a museum.
The centre takes its name from Jórvík, the Old Norse name for York and for the surrounding Viking Kingdom of Yorkshire. It was created by York Archaeological Trust, opened in 1984 and operates as an independent museum.
