The GLBT Historical Society Museum is the first full-scale, stand-alone museum of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history in the United States, and only the second in the world after Berlin's Schwules Museum. It opened in the Castro neighborhood in January 2011, and in 2016 the Swedish Exhibition Agency named it one of just three established museums dedicated to LGBTQ history worldwide.
The museum, at 4127 18th Street, is the exhibition and programming center of the GLBT Historical Society. The society was founded in 1985 and is sometimes called San Francisco's "queer Smithsonian". It holds an extensive collection of archival materials, artifacts and graphic arts on LGBTQ history in the United States, with a focus on the communities of San Francisco and Northern California, and it also records oral histories.
The archives and reading room are housed separately from the museum, on the lower level of 989 Market Street in the Mid-Market district. This makes the society a resource for researchers as well as for anyone interested in LGBTQ history.
