A research library, historical archive and art gallery in one, the Hocken Collections (Uare Taoka o Hākena in Māori, formerly the Hocken Library) hold a library collection of national significance and rank among New Zealand's most important facilities for historical research. The University of Otago administers the collections, which are named after Thomas Hocken and date from 1910.
The holdings focus on the history of New Zealand and the Pacific, with particular emphasis on the Otago and Southland regions. The library is open to the general public, so it suits anyone researching the history of the south of New Zealand as well as visitors interested in the region's past.
