With no permanent collection of its own, Kunsthalle Helsinki (Helsingin Taidehalli in Finnish) has been devoted to changing exhibitions since Finnish artists and art associations founded it in 1928. The non-profit venue presents five to seven major exhibitions and special events each year, centred on contemporary art as well as design and architecture. Visitors with those interests will find the programme new on each return.
The building is part of the attraction. Designed by Hilding Ekelund and Jarl Eklund and completed in 1928, it is a prime example of Nordic Classicism in Finland, a restrained, simplified classical style of the period. Both the building and its interior are protected under the city plan. The building has been renovated several times, including a major refurbishment completed in 2009.
