Opened in 1903, Kyoto City Zoo is the second-oldest zoo in Japan after Tokyo's Ueno Zoo. It was founded with donations raised to mark the wedding of Crown Prince Yoshihito, the future Emperor Taisho. Signs give its Japanese name, Kyoto-shi Dobutsuen (京都市動物園).
The zoo sits in the Okazaki district beside the Lake Biwa Canal, a short walk from Heian Shrine and the area's museums. Its grounds are compact compared with Japan's larger modern zoos, and its enclosures hold a range of animals from around the world as well as native Japanese species.
Its location and modest size make it an easy addition to a day spent around Okazaki, and it is a popular outing for local families. It draws more than a million visitors a year.
