Since 1905, Lisbon Zoo (Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa) has occupied the grounds of Quinta das Laranjeiras in Sete Rios, and it is classified as Immovable Cultural Heritage of Public Interest. The zoo was founded in 1884 in the park of São Sebastião da Pedreira and moved twice, in 1894 and again in 1905, before settling at its present site.
About 2,000 animals of more than 300 species live here, among them mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. The zoo's mission centres on the conservation and breeding of endangered species and on scientific research. It also offers educational and recreational activities for the roughly 800,000 people who visit each year.
