Designed by the architect Theo Wiederspahn in the eclectic style, which mixes elements of several historical styles, the building that houses the Rio Grande do Sul Memorial (Memorial do Rio Grande do Sul) stands on Alfândega Square in Porto Alegre's historic center. It is listed as historical heritage by both the City Hall and the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), Brazil's national heritage body.
Founded in 2001, the memorial operates as a cultural center within this protected historic property.
