The eclectic building that houses the Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art is one of the most noteworthy historic buildings in Porto Alegre and is protected as heritage. Its design is usually attributed to the German-Brazilian architect Theodor Wiederspahn, although the local historian and artist Fernando Corona credited it to Germano Gundlach.
Founded in 1954, the state's art museum stands in the centre of the city. It is named after Ado Malagoli, and its full Portuguese name is Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul Ado Malagoli, usually shortened to MARGS.
