The National Roman Museum (Museo Nazionale Romano) holds one of the world's great collections of ancient Roman art, divided among several buildings across central Rome. Its main seat, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme near Termini station, displays the bronze Boxer at Rest, the Hellenistic Prince, the Lancellotti Discobolus and the painted garden room from the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, its walls covered with fruit trees and birds.
The other sites each have their own character. The Baths of Diocletian, where the museum was founded in 1889, combine vast Roman halls with a Renaissance cloister and an extensive collection of inscriptions. Palazzo Altemps, near Piazza Navona, presents the Ludovisi collection of sculpture, including the Ludovisi Throne and the Galatian Suicide, in a Renaissance palace. The Crypta Balbi traces the city's history from antiquity into the Middle Ages.
The museum suits anyone with an interest in Roman sculpture and painting, and few visitors see every site in a single day.
