The museum occupies these two separate sites in different parts of the city: the old brewery on Via Nizza in the Salario district, and the old slaughterhouse on Piazza Orazio Giustiniani in Testaccio.
Founded in 1999 and run by the city, MACRO is an art museum devoted to modern and contemporary work. It carries an Italian national heritage designation and recorded around 140,000 visitors in 2018.
