The former imperial court stables in Vienna's 7th district now house one of Europe's largest arts and culture complexes, where Baroque buildings stand alongside contemporary museum architecture. Known on signs as MuseumsQuartier Wien, or simply MQ, it opened in 2001 and brings together 61 cultural institutions, drawing around five million visitors a year.
Its major museums are the Leopold Museum and MUMOK, joined by exhibition spaces such as the Kunsthalle Wien and by institutions for dance, architecture and children's culture. Artist studios, cultural initiatives, restaurants and cafés also fill the site, and its public courtyards host events and festivals.
Beyond its galleries, the MQ is a production site for contemporary culture and a prominent meeting place in central Vienna. Scholars have called it an Austrian cultural-policy experiment that combines museums, cultural production, public space and urban redevelopment. It suits visitors drawn to contemporary culture, families, and anyone who wants to spend time in its courtyards.
