Portugal's most important ethnographic collections belong to the National Museum of Ethnology (Museu Nacional de Etnologia) in Lisbon. The museum researches, safeguards and manages more than 40,000 objects from Africa, Asia and South America.
Alongside these holdings, it keeps a separate collection of Portuguese folk art and other forms of the country's own ethnographic heritage. That gives it scope beyond material from other continents.
Founded in 1965, the national museum draws a modest audience of around five thousand visitors a year.
