The world's largest and richest collection of Iranian antiquities is held by the National Museum of Iran (Mūze-ye Melli-ye Irān) in Tehran. With more than three million artifacts, it is regarded as the most important institution for Iranian history and one of the most comprehensive museums anywhere.
The institution brings together two museums. The Museum of Ancient Iran covers the country's earlier history, and the Museum of the Islamic Era covers the later periods. Beyond its galleries, it is a major research centre for archaeology, with research departments organised by historical period.
Founded in 1937, it is one of the oldest archaeological museums in West Asia and one of the region's earliest institutions dedicated to preserving and displaying the past. Its scale and focus make it best suited to visitors with a strong interest in Iranian history and archaeology.
