The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, known as TMoCA (موزه هنرهای معاصر تهران), is considered to hold the most valuable collection of modern Western masterpieces outside Europe and North America. Its holdings of more than 3,000 items include European and American paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries, alongside a major collection of Iranian modern and contemporary art. That pairing makes it a strong draw for anyone interested in modern art, whether from the West or from Iran.
The building was designed by the architect Kamran Diba and draws on both brutalist and Pahlavi architecture. It is listed as Iranian National Heritage. Shahbanu Farah Pahlavi inaugurated the museum in 1977, two years before the 1979 Revolution. It ranks among the largest art museums in Tehran and in Iran.
