Portraits of prominent Australians are the sole focus of the National Portrait Gallery, a public art gallery in Canberra also known as the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.
The gallery was established in 1998 and moved to its present building on King Edward Terrace in December 2008. The building was designed by architect Richard Johnson. Besides collecting and displaying portraits, the institution is a government agency and also works as a publisher.
