The Natural History Museum of Basel (Naturhistorisches Museum Basel) keeps and examines the mummy of Anna Catharina Bischoff, found in 1975 during excavations in Basel's Barfüsserkirche. Also linked to the museum is the skeleton known as Theo the Pipe Smoker, discovered in 1984 near the Theodorskirche in Kleinbasel.
Beyond these two finds, the museum holds more than 11 million objects. Its collections span zoology, entomology (the study of insects), mineralogy, anthropology, osteology (the study of bones) and paleontology.
The museum grew out of a natural history collection established in 1821. It is listed as a Swiss cultural property of national significance and stands at Augustinergasse 2 in Basel.
