More than 150 buildings, moved here from towns and rural districts across Norway, make up the large open-air museum at the centre of Norsk Folkemuseum, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. Alongside these relocated buildings, the museum holds extensive collections of artifacts drawn from all social groups and all regions of the country, so its picture of Norwegian life reaches well beyond any single class or place.
Founded in 1894, the museum stands on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo, close to several other museums, including the Viking Ship Museum, the Fram Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Norwegian Maritime Museum. It drew more than 300,000 visitors in 2018.
