Panels by Robert Campin, Rogier van der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder anchor the Oldmasters Museum's large and internationally important collection of Netherlandish art. Most of it comes from the Southern Netherlands, the region that largely corresponds to modern Belgium, and the collection extends to Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens.
The museum covers European Old Master painting from the 15th to the 18th centuries, with some later works, and also holds paintings and sculptures from other parts of Europe. It particularly suits visitors interested in Flemish and Netherlandish painting.
Napoleon founded the museum in 1801, and it was long known as the Royal Museum of Ancient Art (Musée royal d'Art ancien; Koninklijk Museum voor Oude Kunst). Now called Musée Oldmasters in French, it is one of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. It occupies their main building, the Palace of Fine Arts, on rue de la Régence (Regentschapsstraat) in the Royal Quarter of Brussels.
