Belgium's national film archive, Cinematek, collects and preserves an extensive body of film with a particular focus on Belgian cinema. Its official name is the Royal Belgian Film Archive, or Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique in French and Koninklijk Belgisch Filmarchief in Dutch. Henri Storck, André Thirifays and Piet Vermeylen founded it in 1938.
Beyond its archival work, Cinematek organises film screenings, exhibitions and educational programmes. As a bicultural public utility foundation, it aims to preserve films and documentation of lasting aesthetic, technical or historical value and to make them accessible. It suits film enthusiasts as well as researchers, students and journalists looking for material on cinema and on Belgian film in particular.
