Founded in 1954, Pushkin House (Пушкинский Дом) is the UK's oldest independent Russian cultural centre. A group of émigré Russian friends led by Maria Mikhailovna Kullmann (Zernova) created it as a welcoming meeting-place for Russian culture in all its forms, with an informal atmosphere for exchanging views and freedom of speech as a core principle.
Today, from its home in Bloomsbury, it runs a programme that covers Russian literature, poetry, art, cinema, music, theatre and dance, as well as history, philosophy and current affairs. Visitors come for lectures, exhibitions, films, concerts, readings, panel discussions and debates, and the centre also awards an annual Book Prize.
Pushkin House is a politically independent registered charity, owned and run by the Pushkin House Trust. It suits people who want to engage with Russian culture through talks, performances and conversation rather than a permanent collection.
