Ragunan Zoo traces its roots to 1864, when the painter Raden Saleh gave land in Cikini for a zoo and garden in colonial Batavia. It moved in 1966 to its present home in South Jakarta, where it is known locally as Taman Margasatwa Ragunan. With more than four million visitors a year, it is one of the busiest zoos in Southeast Asia.
The collection centres on Indonesian wildlife, including Sumatran tigers, Komodo dragons, orangutans, anoa and babirusa. Many birds from across the archipelago are kept alongside animals from other continents. A highlight is the Schmutzer Primate Centre, a large forested enclosure for gorillas, orangutans and other apes.
The grounds are expansive and heavily shaded by mature trees, so the zoo also serves as one of the city's largest green spaces. It is a favourite with Jakarta families, especially on weekends and holidays, and covering it properly takes a good part of a day.
