In 1880, when the federalization of Buenos Aires set off a revolution, Argentina's national government had to abandon its seat downtown and move to this building in Belgrano, then on the outskirts of the city. The building now houses the Sarmiento Historical Museum (Museo Histórico Sarmiento), founded in 1942.
The museum is devoted to Argentine history, particularly the Generation of '80 and the life of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the writer and political figure who was President of Argentina from 1868 to 1874. Further sections cover the literary works of his presidential successor, Nicolás Avellaneda, and the 1880 revolution that brought the government to this house.
It suits visitors interested in nineteenth-century Argentine politics and letters.
