Taiwan's first private museum devoted to the culture and history of the island's indigenous peoples, the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines (順益台灣原住民博物館) opened in June 1994. It stands about 200 metres diagonally across from the National Palace Museum in Taipei's Shilin District.
The galleries display many types of artefacts from different indigenous tribes of Taiwan. These communities live mainly in the mountainous regions of the island's east and south and have historically spoken a variety of Austronesian languages. The museum has both permanent displays and rotating exhibitions.
