The first museum in Taiwan built for contemporary art exhibitions, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (臺北市立美術館, often shortened to TFAM) opened on August 8, 1983. It stands in the Taipei Expo Park in Zhongshan District, on the former site of the United States Taiwan Defense Command.
The building is a draw in its own right. Architect Kao Er-Pan designed it as a local interpretation of the Japanese Metabolist Movement, a postwar architectural approach that treated buildings as modular, adaptable structures. That makes the museum of interest to visitors who come for architecture as well as for contemporary art.
