STAM, the Ghent City Museum (Stadsmuseum Gent in Dutch), tells the story of Ghent from inside the historic Bijloke abbey and Bijloke monastery, linked by a new entrance building designed by the city architect Koen Van Nieuwenhuyse.
The main circuit works as an introduction to the city, combining museum displays with multimedia. Chronologically structured rooms trace Ghent's past and explore different themes, and the circuit also considers the city's life today and its future. A section is dedicated to the Ghent Altarpiece. Because the museum points visitors outward to the city itself and its cultural heritage, it suits anyone looking for an overview before exploring Ghent.
The collection's history goes back to 1833, when the Oudheidkundig Museum van de Bijloke was founded. In 1928 it moved into the Bijloke abbey and became known as the Bijlokemuseum. Built on that collection, with additions from others, STAM opened on 9 October 2010 and won the Flemish Museum Prize in 2012.
