Administering the annual Guldbagge Awards and managing the Swedish Film Database are among the responsibilities of the Swedish Film Institute (Svenska Filminstitutet), the Stockholm statutory body that supports the Swedish film industry. It is also listed as a cinematheque, an institution devoted to film archives and screenings, and as a nonprofit organization.
The institute was founded in 1963 under founder-director Harry Schein, who led it from 1963 to 1970 and again from 1972 to 1978. Anna Serner, chief executive from 2011 to 2021, is known for an initiative that aimed for gender parity in the film industry.
